Direction Sense test is one of the most scoring and frequent topics in the CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) paper for UPSC CSE and MPSC Rajyaseva. These questions test a candidate’s ability to trace path directions, calculate distances, and determine spatial orientations.
1. Core Concepts & Directions Chart
There are four cardinal directions (North, South, East, West) and four ordinal/sub-cardinal directions (North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West). Drawing a simple direction cross on your rough sheet is the first step to solving any question.
- Cardinal Directions: North (pointing upwards), South (downwards), East (to the right), West (to the left).
- Ordinal Directions: North-East (between North and East), North-West (between North and West), South-East (between South and East), South-West (between South and West).
2. Important Rules for Turning
- Right Turn: A right turn always corresponds to a 90-degree clockwise rotation.
- Left Turn: A left turn always corresponds to a 90-degree counter-clockwise rotation.
- If a person is facing North, their right is East and left is West. If a person is facing South, their right is West and left is East. Be careful about this inversion.
3. Shadow Problems (Sunrise and Sunset)
Shadow questions are highly popular in CSAT. Here are the golden rules:
- At Sunrise: Since the sun rises in the East, the shadow of any object or person will always fall towards the West. If a person faces North, their shadow will be to their left. If they face South, their shadow will be to their right.
- At Sunset: Since the sun sets in the West, the shadow will always fall towards the East.
4. Pythagoras Theorem for Shortest Distance
Often, questions ask for the ‘shortest distance’ between the starting and ending points. This requires the Pythagoras Theorem: Hypotenuse² = Base² + Height² (or H = √(B² + P²)).

Question: Rohan walks 10 meters North, then turns right and walks 10 meters. He then turns left and walks 5 meters. Finally, he turns left and walks 10 meters. How far and in which direction is he now from his starting point?
Solution: Let Rohan start at point A. 1. Rohan walks 10m North to point B. 2. He turns right (facing East) and walks 10m to point C. 3. He turns left (facing North) and walks 5m to point D. 4. He turns left (facing West) and walks 10m to point E. Notice that the horizontal movements cancel out (10m East and then 10m West). The vertical movements add up (10m North + 5m North = 15m North). Therefore, Rohan is exactly 15 meters North from his starting point.
