While Mains tests your depth of knowledge, Prelims is a test of breadth, logic, and risk-taking ability. The best way to clear Prelims is not just by reading more, but by mastering the art of elimination and reverse engineering the Previous Year Questions (PYQs).

1. The ‘Reverse Engineering’ Technique

Instead of reading a textbook and then solving MCQs, do the opposite for the last 100 days. Take a 10-year PYQ booklet. Look at the options the examiner has framed. Often, the incorrect options in one year become the main question in the next year’s paper. Research every single option provided in the PYQs.

2. Mastering the ‘Elimination Game’

  • Extreme Words: Statements with words like ‘All’, ‘Always’, ‘None’, or ‘Never’ are often incorrect in GS subjects (though there are exceptions in Science & Tech).
  • Ministry Swaps: The UPSC frequently swaps the names of ministries implementing a particular scheme to confuse candidates.
  • Technology Applicability: In Science & Tech questions (like AI, Blockchain, Nanotech), if a statement says ‘can be used for…’, it is generally correct, as futuristic tech has broad theoretical applications.

3. Attempt Ratio and Risk Taking

With the changing difficulty level, attempting only 60-70 questions is highly risky. To clear the cutoff, you generally need to attempt 80-85+ questions, which means taking calculated risks on questions where you have eliminated at least two options.
