Preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Mains examination requires dedicated and highly structured efforts. With the 2026 attempt in sight, having a 12-month masterplan is essential to ensure every subject is covered and revised.
Months 1-3: Core Static Subjects & Optional
Dedicate the first 3 months to your Optional subject and core static GS subjects (History, Geography, Polity). Your optional subject plays a decisive role in the final merit list, so aim to complete at least 60-70% of its syllabus in this phase.
Months 4-6: Ethics, Essay, and Answer Writing Initiation
Start Ethics (GS 4) and practice Essay writing every weekend. This is also the time to begin Daily Answer Writing (DAW) for GS 1, 2, and 3. Don’t worry about time limits initially; focus on the structure and content quality.
Months 7-9: Current Affairs Integration & Advanced Answer Writing
Integrate your current affairs notes with static topics. Shift your answer writing practice to time-bound sessions (7-8 minutes per answer). Start solving full-length sectional tests to build stamina.
Months 10-12: Revision, Mock Tests & Prelims Shift
The last few months should be heavily focused on revisions. While you gradually shift focus toward the Prelims exam, continue writing at least 2-3 Mains answers daily to stay in touch with the writing format.
